One step at a time

There is a false expectation of greatness, of success, of setting big goals (those Big Hairy Audacious Goals), and then giving up or moving on when progress isn’t immediate.

There are no overnight successes.

Progress happens one step at a time. Then as momentum builds, exponential growth has you running as those “one-step-at-a-times” happen much faster. Even if it happens faster, it still comes one step at a time.

This one-step-at-a-time progress happens in different areas of life..whether athletics, academics, health, professional life, hobbies. Progress happens one step at a time.

Let’s consider it in the spiritual realm.

Do you find it easy to give up on prayer when you don’t see an answer right away?

Do you find it easy to give up on Bible reading when you don’t understand right away?

Do you find it easy to sacrifice Sabbath because there is always one more thing to do?

Do you find it easy to remove spiritual habits from your life because other events or activities become a higher priority?

Obviously, we could all use a little more progress in our spiritual lives and habits.

What is one step you could take today in the right direction? Once you make that step, consider what step to take after that.

Then take another step. And another. And another. And keep stepping. Pretty soon you’ll be able to look back and realize that where you are is far from where you were and it all started with one step.

Don’t try to read the Bible in a year. Start with reading one verse. Then, read that verse again. Then, memorize that verse.

Don’t try to fast once a week every week. Instead, try a one-time fast, journal and pray, and go from there.

Don’t try to pray for thirty consecutive minutes without distraction. Instead, try praying for three minutes without distraction. Then take a break. Then go back at a different time and pray again.

Just take one step. Then take another. Then another. Progress comes one step at a time.
